Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Vetiver good for erosion control?
Vetiver has a very deep, vertical root system that holds soil together. The dense hedge slows water flow, traps sediment, and reduces soil loss on slopes and banks.
Where can Vetiver be planted?
Vetiver can be planted on steep banks, slopes, driveways, waterways, riparian margins, culverts, drainage areas, and erosion-prone sites. It performs well in most soil types including clay, silt, and sandy soils.
How far apart should Vetiver be planted?
For erosion control, plants are usually spaced 20 cm apart (5 plants per meter) to form a dense hedge.
Does Vetiver need much water?
Vetiver needs regular watering during establishment (initial 2-3 weeks). Once established, it is very drought tolerant.
How tall does Vetiver grow?
Vetiver can grow up to 2 metres tall. It can be trimmed if required to 50cms tall in spring and summer, which encourages dense growth.
Do you provide planting instructions?
Yes. All orders include planting and establishment guidance, and we are happy to provide site-specific advice.
Can you help calculate how many plants I need?
Yes. If you send us the length of the area, a photo or brief description of the site, and your delivery location, we can provide planting recommendations to suit your site, budget, and needs.
Do you deliver throughout New Zealand?
Yes. We ship Vetiver plants nationwide. Local pickup may also be available by arrangement.
Is Vetiver invasive
No. The Vetiver we supply is a sterile, noninvasive variety. It does not seed and will only grow where it is planted.
Does Vetiver survive heavy rain or flooding?
Yes. Once established, Vetiver tolerates heavy rainfall, flooding, and flowing water very well.
When is the best time to plant Vetiver?
The best planting time is between mid September and early March. Earlier planting allows the roots to establish before winter.
Does Vetiver need Fertiliser?
Vetiver grows well in poor soils, However, use of a slow release fertiliser at planting can help with early growth.
Can Vetiver be planted near waterways?
Yes. Vetiver is ideal for riparian planting and helps improve water quality by trapping sediment and nutrients.

Where are our plants grown?
Our plants are grown and potted on our property in Waihi, New Zealand. They are placed outdoors on weed-matting, allowing them to harden naturally to local conditions from the very beginning.
This growing method produces strong, resilient plants that are well adapted to New Zealand environments. Before dispatch, every plant goes through our quality-control process to ensure customers receive plants that are healthy, well-established, and ready to thrive once planted.
